Does Gokshura Really Boost Testosterone? What Human Studies Actually Show

Gokshura, botanically known as Tribulus terrestris, has become one of the best-known herbs in men's wellness supplements.
Search online and you will often see claims such as:
“Natural testosterone booster.”
“Supports higher testosterone.”
“Builds muscle naturally.”
But does Gokshura actually raise testosterone in humans?
That question has now been studied in multiple clinical trials and systematic reviews.
The answer is much less dramatic than the marketing.
Current human evidence does not show that Gokshura reliably raises testosterone in healthy men.
That does not mean the herb is scientifically uninteresting. It means we need to separate its traditional reputation, its plant chemistry, and what clinical trials have actually demonstrated.
First, What Is Testosterone?
Testosterone is an androgen hormone involved in areas such as:
reproductive function
sexual development
muscle and bone physiology
sperm production
energy and general hormonal health
Men naturally have different testosterone levels depending on age, health, sleep, body composition, medications, time of day, and other factors.
So when a supplement is described as a “testosterone booster,” there should ideally be convincing evidence that people taking it actually experience a meaningful and reproducible increase in measured testosterone.
That is where the Gokshura story becomes interesting.
Why Did Gokshura Become Known as a Testosterone Booster?
Gokshura has a long traditional association with reproductive wellness, sexual wellness, vitality, and physical strength.
But its modern testosterone reputation appears to have developed from several overlapping ideas:
its traditional association with vitality and sexual wellness
the presence of naturally occurring steroidal saponins
particular attention to a compound called protodioscin
laboratory and animal research
sports-supplement marketing
Your main Gokshura guide already captures the crucial distinction:
steroidal saponins are not testosterone.
That deserves a closer look.
What Are Steroidal Saponins?
The word “steroidal” sounds powerful.
It can make consumers think of testosterone or anabolic steroids.
But that is not what it means here.
Steroidal saponins are naturally occurring plant compounds whose chemical structures have certain steroid-like characteristics.
Gokshura contains compounds in this class, including protodioscin.
However:
a plant containing steroidal saponins does not mean the plant contains testosterone.
And consuming those compounds does not automatically mean that the human body will produce more testosterone.
This is a classic example of the difference between:
plant chemistry and clinical outcome.
What Did the 2025 Systematic Review Find?
One of the most useful pieces of evidence is a recent systematic review examining Tribulus terrestris supplementation, erectile dysfunction, and testosterone levels in men.
The review included 10 clinical studies involving 483 participants.
What happened?
Eight of the ten studies did not report significant changes in androgen levels.
Only two studies reported increases in testosterone.
But there was an important detail:
those studies involved men with hypogonadism, meaning they already had abnormally low testosterone or impaired gonadal function.
Even in those studies, the reported testosterone increases were described as relatively small in clinical magnitude.
What does that mean in plain English?
Imagine researchers test a supplement in ten different groups.
In eight groups:
testosterone does not meaningfully increase.
In two groups:
there is a small increase, but those participants began with an underlying low-testosterone condition.
That pattern does not support the broad statement:
“Tribulus boosts testosterone in men.”
A much more accurate statement is:
Current human evidence does not show that Tribulus reliably raises testosterone, particularly in healthy men.
That was essentially the conclusion of the systematic review itself.
Why Are Men With Low Testosterone Different From Healthy Men?
This distinction is very important.
If an intervention produces a small change in people with abnormal hormonal function, that does not automatically mean it will push normal testosterone higher in healthy people.
Think of it this way.
If someone is deficient in a nutrient, correcting the deficiency may improve a biological measurement.
That does not mean taking more of the same thing will keep pushing the measurement upward indefinitely in someone who was already normal.
Similarly, findings in men with hypogonadism cannot automatically be generalized to:
healthy young men
athletes
bodybuilders
men with normal testosterone levels
This is one reason supplement marketing can become misleading when it takes results from a very specific population and applies them to everyone.
What Did the Earlier Systematic Review Find?
An earlier systematic review also examined the reputation of Tribulus terrestris as an aphrodisiac and performance-enhancing herb.
It reached a similar conclusion:
the popular claim that Tribulus meaningfully increases testosterone was not supported by convincing human evidence.
This matters because the negative finding is not coming from a single isolated trial.
Different reviews conducted at different times have reached broadly similar conclusions about testosterone.
But Doesn't Gokshura Improve Sexual Function?
This is where many people become confused.
Some human research suggests Tribulus terrestris may improve certain measurements of erectile or sexual function.
A recent systematic review and meta-analysis reported improvements in erectile-function scores compared with placebo.
But—and this is the critical point—
testosterone did not significantly increase compared with placebo.
That tells us something very useful:
Better sexual function does not automatically mean higher testosterone.
Sexual function depends on many systems, including:
circulation
nitric-oxide signaling
neurological function
psychological health
stress
sleep
medication effects
metabolic health
hormonal status
Your Gokshura guide specifically makes this distinction because supplement advertisements often blur sexual performance and testosterone into one claim.
So someone might theoretically experience a change in sexual-function measurements without experiencing a meaningful change in testosterone.
Those are separate outcomes.
Does Protodioscin Prove That Tribulus Raises Testosterone?
No.
Protodioscin is one of the best-known compounds associated with Tribulus terrestris.
Because of its chemical classification and early experimental research, it has often been used to support marketing claims about testosterone.
But the presence of a biologically interesting phytochemical does not prove a specific clinical effect.
Your main Gokshura page makes the point clearly:
The presence of protodioscin does not establish that consuming Tribulus significantly raises circulating testosterone in humans.
Human trials are what matter.
And systematic reviews of those trials have not found a convincing, consistent testosterone-boosting effect.
Why Can Animal Research Look More Impressive?
Animal and laboratory studies are valuable because they help scientists understand possible biological mechanisms.
But animals are not miniature humans.
A compound may:
be absorbed differently
be metabolized differently
be given at a proportionally much higher dose
affect hormone pathways differently
That means an effect seen in an animal cannot simply be converted into a claim about humans.
This is particularly important with Gokshura because some of its modern reputation came from preclinical research and theoretical mechanisms rather than consistently positive human testosterone studies.
What About Athletes and Bodybuilders?
This is another useful reality check.
If Gokshura strongly raised testosterone, we might reasonably expect trials in resistance-trained men to show improvements in areas such as:
testosterone
muscle mass
strength
body composition
exercise performance
But the human evidence does not clearly show that.
A systematic review of studies in physically active men found no convincing evidence that Tribulus improved hormonal behavior or muscle-damage markers.
An earlier randomized trial in resistance-trained males also reported no meaningful improvement in body weight, body composition, or bench-press performance after eight weeks of Tribulus supplementation.

the expected downstream effects of a powerful testosterone booster have not appeared consistently in human trials.
Does the Form of Gokshura Matter?
Yes.
And this is another reason the research cannot be reduced to:
“Tribulus works” or “Tribulus doesn't work.”
Clinical studies have used products differing in:
plant part
extraction method
dose
saponin concentration
standardization
One supplement may contain whole Gokshura.
Another may contain a concentrated extract standardized to a percentage of saponins.
Another may use a different plant part altogether.
This makes comparison difficult.
Even if a particular standardized extract eventually demonstrated a testosterone effect, that finding could not automatically be applied to every whole-herb Gokshura product.
The reverse is also true.
Does a Higher Saponin Percentage Mean a Better Testosterone Booster?
Not necessarily.
Consumers may see products advertising very high percentages of steroidal saponins and assume:
more saponins = more testosterone.
Clinical evidence does not establish such a simple relationship.
Your current Gokshura guide correctly warns consumers not to assume that the supplement with the highest claimed saponin percentage is automatically the most effective.
A percentage on a label does not replace clinical evidence.
Could Gokshura Affect Testosterone in Some Specific People?
Possibly.
This is where we need to avoid making the opposite exaggeration.
The current evidence does not prove that Gokshura can never influence testosterone in anyone.
Two studies included in the recent systematic review reported small increases in men with hypogonadism.
That raises a reasonable research question:
Could particular Tribulus preparations have an effect in certain men with low testosterone?
Possibly.
But that is very different from saying:
“Gokshura is a natural testosterone booster.”
To answer the question convincingly, future trials would need to study clearly defined populations using standardized products and adequate sample sizes.
What Would a Strong Testosterone Trial Look Like?
Imagine researchers enrolled several hundred men with similar baseline testosterone levels.
Participants would receive either:
a precisely characterized Tribulus preparation
or
an identical-looking placebo.
Neither the participants nor the researchers evaluating them would know who received which until the study ended.
Researchers would measure:
total testosterone
free testosterone
SHBG
LH
FSH
sexual-function outcomes
body composition
adverse events
They would also standardize when testosterone was measured because testosterone naturally varies during the day.
The trial would need to last long enough to identify a meaningful and reproducible effect.
That would tell us much more than a small uncontrolled study.
So, Does Gokshura Boost Testosterone?
Based on current human research:
not reliably.
The strongest current evidence suggests that most clinical studies do not find significant testosterone increases with Tribulus terrestris supplementation.
A small number of studies have reported modest increases in men with hypogonadism, but those findings are not sufficient to describe Gokshura as a general testosterone booster.
The most scientifically accurate statement is:
Gokshura has been studied for male reproductive wellness, but current human evidence does not support describing it as a reliable testosterone booster.
Then Why Is Gokshura Still Interesting?
Because testosterone is only one part of the story.
The herb has a long traditional history involving urinary, reproductive and sexual wellness.
And modern research into sexual function has produced some more promising findings—even when testosterone did not change.
That actually makes the science more interesting.
Instead of asking only:
“Does it raise testosterone?”
researchers can ask:
“Could Gokshura influence male sexual wellness through mechanisms that are not primarily hormonal?”

Gokshura's reputation as a testosterone booster is much stronger than the human evidence supporting it.
A recent systematic review found that eight of ten studies did not show significant androgen changes, while the two studies reporting increases involved men with hypogonadism and found relatively modest effects.
Earlier systematic evidence reached a similar conclusion.
So the most responsible interpretation is:
Gokshura cannot currently be considered a reliably proven natural testosterone booster.
At the same time, that does not mean the herb has no scientific interest.
Research into sexual and reproductive wellness remains active, and some findings suggest effects may occur through pathways other than simply raising testosterone.
Tradition created the reputation.
Marketing amplified it.
